PhD Program

GSISH aims to define a new approach and overall concept for education and research in health by emphasizing the ever-increasing importance of Information Science (IS) in health, health technology and related technology fields (biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals).

IS embraces and supports these fields, and also facilitates the pioneering of new services. We believe that IS will be the most important driver and mediator for innovation in all health-related scientific disciplines. It will even have more significant impact than previously witnessed in other areas such as the automotive industry, traffic control or global logistics.

Therefore, all students in GSISH will receive true interdisciplinary tuition in at least two previously distinct fields while performing their research work. For example, students of medicine and life sciences will attend compulsory advanced courses in engineering; conversely, engineers will attend compulsory lectures in medicine. The final aim will be a PhD degree, awarded by the academic institutes involved in cooperation with GSISH.

This interdisciplinary graduate school will link the leading scientific institutions of the two Munich universities with hospitals and research centers. A number of industrial partners from the Munich area have already offered to provide the graduate school with financial resources and with re-search-oriented traineeships. The integration of GSISH into the Graduate School "TUM-GS" will guarantee its long-term operation and its continuing evolution.
